Finding a New Name
The Homosexuals

by Carl McIntire

A homosexual group launches a $1 million campaign for understanding.

Jean O'Leary and Bruce Voeller, directors of the National Gay Task Force, announced a national campaign to change the public image of homosexuals as "sinful, criminal or sick." Miss O'Leary said the campaign, entitled "We are Your Children," would raise the $1 million through entertainment benefits and local homosexual-rights groups. Meanwhile, at Fort Rucker, Ala., the Army opened a hearing to decide whether it should discharge Sp-4 Marie Sode for marrying another woman."

Philadelphia Inquirer, June 14, 1977

Another name must be given to what they call the "Gays." They are a long way from being gay.

The homosexuals, or, as the Bible calls them, "effeminate" or "abusers of themselves with mankind," have now to be dealt with by society. The USA has to face them.

Dade County, Florida, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, in a referendum, June 7, 1977, by a vote of 202,319 to 89,564 repealed an ordinance forbidding discrimination against them because of their "affectionate or sex preference." It was done in the name of human rights. National publicity, including television, radio, has alerted the whole country. A bill is now before the Congress to give the same human rights status to the homosexuals that the Dade County Council sought, but which society has rejected. The homosexuals have announced that they will go to court and have the referendum declared unconstitutional.

A young mother, Anita Bryant, with four children, went to the County Council and opposed the ordinance. It was passed. She was already well known as a singer and television celebrity. She organized Save Our Children, Inc., circulated petitions to put the question on a ballot for referendum, and secured 66,000 names.

Prayers have been going up for a long time from all sections of the country, that God would undertake in some way to stop these abominations. Now the homosexuals claim that they have been united and have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars.

So offensive and so powerful politically have they become that action is required by the citizens of this nation. The issue was brought into sharp focus in Florida because the ordinance applied to private schools, including Christian schools, in the County. The County was going to force Christian schools to hire self-confessed, bragging homosexuals to stand before the students day after day in the classrooms. The battle was being carried on in the name of human rights by the homosexuals. They used such names as Dade County Coalition for Human Rights, Miami

Victory Committee. A New York-based National Gay Task Force, as they called themselves, said the defeat was a defeat for human rights. Most of all, all who were involved for the homosexuals maintained it was not a moral issue!

Once again, the liberal, leftist media in the United States threw its entire weight behind the homosexuals. Open abuse was directed against those who were opposing the homosexuals and especially Anita Bryant. Newsweek June 6, on its front cover, had as its headlines: "Battle Over Gay Rights," and "Anita Bryant versus the Homosexuals.'

Another paper headlined "One Thousand Gays in Philadelphia 'Roast' Anita Bryant." The issue was personal and abusive. She was caricatured on NBC in a coast-to-coast program the night of the victory with a gay playing a banjo and singing, "She is preaching hate." Where have we heard that before? An AP story, carried in the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, Wednesday, June 8, said, "They accused Miss Bryant of Launching a witch hunt." Where have we heard that before? The New York Times, Wednesday, June 8, reporting the election, said that the homosexuals have built up a war chest of $300,000, but in their newspaper ads alleged that the homos were being subject to hate, witch-hunt, Nazi-style attacks. Where has this been heard before?

These are the allegations that have been heaped for years upon those who stood up against the liberal society, or the leftists and the Communists. These are the epithets that the anti-war groups were constantly hurling at those who maintained that we should win the war and have victory over Communism. All of this arose as one great avalanche to be hurled against Anita Bryant and those who would oppose the homosexuals. The pattern is pretty well set. Things have not changed. This is not the argument; it is abuse. This is not fact; it is falsehood. It is the argument against the man, ad hominem, and should be dismissed. The New York Times published the day of the election a lengthy feature on its editorial pages by two homosexuals. It emphasized their "love" for one another; it attacked the "fundamentalists."

This recognizes where the fighters can be found in this country when it comes to matters of morality, decency, righteousness. It is the fundamentalists who have been willing to stay in the thick of the fight and not retreat or turn away. All the forces of revolution joined hands to win the referendum and vindicate the homosexuals. They lost singing, "We shall overcome."

At issue were the most serious questions concerning the nature of our society and the place of God and His Law in it.

I. THE JUDGMENT OF GOD UPON THE HOMOSEXUAL

Homosexuals or lesbians cannot produce a baby, a family, or a society. The legislation speaks of "affectionate or sex preference." God, however, does not provide for any form of sex preference. It has to be male with female. This is the way He made them in the beginning and commanded them to be fruitful and multiply. The Bible, on the other hand, condemns in the severest terms any effort to have sex" relations with animals or to have sexual relations with those of the same sex. "Cursed be he that lieth with any manner of beast" (Deut. 27:21). "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination" (Lev. 18:22). God, the Creator, has decreed that any relations before marriage is sin, fornication; any extra-marital relations after marriage is also sin, adultery. The sanctity of the union, "Until death do us part," has the seal of Jesus Christ, who said, "What God has joined together let no man put asunder." The wonder and the glory of a little babe and a human being with all his responsibilities under God are protected by God. There are no sexual preferences. The assumption that there are, is in itself a defiance of nature, creation, and God.

The New York Times article, June 7, emphasized their having "loving or sexual feelings for their own sex" and then their article quotes St. Paul as saying, "Love worketh no ill to his neighbour; love, therefore, is the fulfilment of the law." But love does not destroy the law. The Apostle Paul in Romans, chapter I and 2, makes very clear what the law says.

He speaks of these homosexuals as those who "became vain in their imaginations.... Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves" (Rom. 1:24). Then in verse 26 of chapter 1, he says, "For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: ["Vile affections" can never be called love] for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."

Then in chapter 2 Paul writes, "We are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things" (v. 2). This is the fundamentalism that they are objecting to, but it is the basis on which the battle was won in Florida and on which it must be won in every section of the United States. All such laws must be repealed and kept from the books. The effort to enact such laws must be opposed with the same vigor and sensibility as the battle that was waged and won in Florida. This struggle has turned men's minds back again to the Bible and to God, also to their responsibility for their society, themselves, their families, their children. God must have His place of authority in the life of the nation and in the life of the people who make up its society.

II. THE JUDGMENT OF SOCIETY AGAINST THE HOMOSEXUALS

Society has a conscience. This provides the moral standards and fabric that make up society. Many thought that because Miami was considered to be one of the most liberal and permissive areas of the country that the homosexuals would win there. But they lost. When the chips were down, and people thought in terms of homosexuals marrying, living next to them, carrying on in the streets, and bars and keeping a conscious provocation of the indecency involved before the minds of the public, they said No. This was the right of the community. Human rights cannot extend to the denial of constitutional rights, and human rights cannot be used to blur or destroy the morality necessary to preserve order and decency in society. Human rights were used to support the homosexuals and confuse the public. They do not apply.

The right of a private school, a Christian school, to teach and to hire those who will hold and practice their views and religious tenets is a constitutional right, and no legislation by a county in the name of "rights" can nullify it. Crimes against society are now being committed in the name of "human" rights. God told Moses the "nations are defiled" by such abominations.

Morality is being reversed. The two homosexuals writing in The New York Times said, "We believe it is immoral to pretend to children that they don't have a variety of loving options in their own lives." In truth it is immoral to teach children that they do have a number of "loving options," that is to have sex relations with their own sex, or even to indicate that they may have relations with their pets. But God is the one who sets the standards of morality, not the homosexuals; and society must attend to the moral standards that God has given in the Ten Commandments. This includes, "Thou shalt not commit adultery," which includes the whole sphere of man's relationship to the opposite sex and his responsibilities to continue the human race from generation to generation.

This homosexual issue is a tremendous challenge to the United States. The whole moral fabric of society is involved.

The Equal Rights Amendment is at the very heart of this conflict, too. If it were passed, and this present victory will certainly inhibit it, it would forbid any legislation or it would cancel all laws on the books that deal in any way with sex, which would mean that marriages could be consummated between lesbians and lesbians and homosexuals and homosexuals, licenses being given to them. The whole pyramid of laws established through the years in regard to sex relation, and these crimes, such as sodomy would collapse. The homosexuals have been in the forefront of the drive for the ERA across the country. However, the people of the nation have been stirred and aroused, and because of this no state in the South has adopted the amendment and none have adopted it this year. The National Council of Churches which also backed the homos in Florida, has said it would not hold any meetings including its agencies in any state not approving the ERA. Forty-four million Americans are in the NCC.

Society has a responsibility to protect itself from its own suicide and destruction. Now the liberal New York Times maintains that the Dade County vote was "Tyranny of a majority" and the "rights" of the homos "are too important to be trusted to the passions of passing majorities."

The homosexual as a single individual does enjoy the constitutional rights just as any other individual in society does. He is not being denied those! What he is now asking in the name of "rights" is to reorder the basis of society whereby he himself will not be productive or responsible in any way for the continuance of that society. When he moves into these areas and calls them rights, he is destroying "rights" and defiling society and mankind. What the homo is demanding is not a "human right" in a decent, free society.

III. THE SALVATION OF THE HOMOSEXUAL - A GIFT OF GOD

Homosexuals can be changed. They can become decent, happy, law abiding citizens.

The very fundamentalists who have objected to their so-called sexual choices also have the message that will give them deliverance from themselves and their misery.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ alone does this. One reason the struggle which is now facing the country is so important is that the homosexuals are being confronted with the Gospel and some have come forward and explained that they were formerly homosexual and now have been gloriously saved and received the wonder of the new birth and the power to lead clean straight lives.

When the Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, he was specific and emphatic: "Be not deceived: neither ... effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind ... shall inherit the kingdom of God" (I Cor. 6:9, 10). Nothing is a greater travesty today than the homosexual clergyman in the homosexual church. Homosexuals in their sin and their evil practices cannot inherit the kingdom of God. Every Christian who ever read the Bible and believes it knows that this is the truth God set.

Then the Apostle turns and says, "And such were some of you: but ye are washed, . . ." (I Cor. 5:11). He is explaining that in Corinth with all its sin, homosexuals heard the Gospel, were changed, turned from their effeminate and their practices of abuse with others of the same sex and became decent, upright human beings. In fact, Paul says, "Ye are washed ... ye are sanctified ... in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God" (v. 11). In the same passage he denounces fornication - that is, sexual relations before the marriage bonds. He says, "Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.... Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh" (vv. 13, 15, 16). "What?" he says, "know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's" (v. 19).

Here is a magnificent, glorious motivation and reality that God gives to the Christian. A homosexual cannot be a Christian. There is no such thing as a "born again" homosexual. God alone gives the power to break the sin and the old nature with its lust which is in the homosexual. In I Corinthians, Paul says, "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are" (1 Cor. 3:16, 17). Paul was contrasting this with the pagan temple that stood on the northwest hill of Corinth.

God produces a kind of people that makes a decent society, and that is why it is said in all emphasis that the hope of America today is the Lord Jesus Christ, the Gospel with its power, and that God offers salvation to men as His gift, free to all. The homosexual who wants to cease being a homosexual with all that is involved and desires to be a normal, natural man may become one only by the power of God. Paul says, "I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek" (Rom. 1: 16). In the opening verses of the first and second chapters Paul has described the misery, degradation, and the frightful judgment that befalls the homosexuals.

Getting these things straight and clear now for God's people is every individual's responsibility. A beautiful and glorious opportunity has come not only for men to witness and work to save countless souls, but also to save the country and keep it decent and free. For where the Spirit of God is, there is liberty. Prayer must be one of the great weapons. It is prayer that produced Anita Bryant. It is prayer that will give faith and courage and strength to others in every section of the land. Every lawful means that God has given us must be used to preserve and protect our country.

God loves the homosexuals; His love is offered to them in Jesus Christ. God condemns, as we have seen in Romans, in the severest terms their iniquity; His wrath is revealed from Heaven. But His love is offered to all on the cross of Calvary. "If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" (2 Cor. 5:17), and in John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." May God save our children, may God save the homosexuals, may God save America! "Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord" (I Cor. 15:58).

Salvation is of the Lord!
